Each semester VUdat surveys faculty and students about online learning at MSU. These surveys track uses and attitudes toward tools for online learning in fully online, hybrid, and enhanced courses. Tips and techniques compiled by VUdat producers appear at the end of the faculty surveys, offering possible solutions to faculty write-in requests.

Here are results from recent semesters:

Michigan State University owns a campus-wide license for ANGEL, a commercial Learning Management System (LMS), deployed on a university-wide scale.

Since fall 2003, ANGEL course space is automatically created for every course offered each semester. The faculty of record has access to course creation and administration tools. All enrolled students are also automatically have access to log in to the ANGEL course space.

vuDAT project leaders are available for pedagogical and design consultation. To set up an appointment, email vuDAT Director Dr. Joan Predko.

To see all courses you have access to, go to the MSU ANGEL home page and log on using your MSU ID and password. If you are the instructor of record for a course offered this semester, but that course does not appear after you log on, contact your department and ask them to be sure you are officially instructor of record.

ANGEL provides a range of tools for teaching and learning which can be used to enhance in person courses in addition to fully online courses. The phrase "hybrid course" is a hot new topic in education. It refers to courses which meet in a classroom but also use online tools to enhance the learning experience.

The question of which tools to use depends upon the content and style of each particular course. We are just beginning to understand how best to use online tools to enhance and extend in person courses. You're part of the university-wide exploration!
